Return to Nature (Homage to Arvo Pärt)

The bookbinding and the content are closely connected, and they can be regarded as a whole. They are intertwined and then weave into a united piece. Namely, the book itself is a complete conceptual artwork, which embodies the underlying meaning and structure of Arvo Pärt’s music.

Inspired by Arvo Pärt’s statement, 'The words write my music', the experiment conducted allows his music to construct this book. His music serves and carries out the text, giving it a sound-based existence. This book serves as a container for the text and music, and then its art form merges with these creations, much like alchemy.

'Spiegel im Spiegel' is undoubtedly a masterpiece. Some musical materials are selected from the score and then recreated as a notation based on his composition. Not only the book covers but also the book structures visualise the music notes. Music is an architectural work involving time and space, similar to bookmaking. To a certain extent, the bookbinding also becomes part of the music.

'Mirror in the Mirror', the title reflects what is happening in his music. The music scores present that each ascending melodic line is followed by a descending mirror phrase. After each distancing, the melody returns to the central pitch. This composition is applied to the bookbinding. The colour gradation of the papers interprets the pitch variation, and the graphic notes flow through the book covers to the central section of the book content. The bookbinding work transforms into a three-dimensional music visualisation, which resonates with the composer’s concept of 'Returning home after being away'.

'In principio', referencing Arvo Pärt’s worldview, is the core of his creative idea.

'In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.’ — John 1:1

White symbolises light, the beginning of the creation, the whole Universe. It’s simple yet powerful. It seems void yet inclusive. While the moving light is introduced to this work, the cut-out shapes transform into dancing notes. Additionally, the white book cover paper is so thin that the light can be seen through it, revealing the paper's special texture. The bookbinding includes many details with various tones of white. The subtle differences are like every individual has their unique way of expression. All of them are interconnected and rooted in a united consciousness, which is close to the ultimate truth that Arvo Pärt continually pursues, returning to the pure essence within.
